Rick’s Reflections | Ten Critical Success Factors to Identify & Diagnose Change

Identifying and Diagnosing Change is the major activity performed by change management practitioners according to the recently released Change Management Market Research Study conducted by the Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP – 2013).   As I reviewed the results of this report, I couldn’t help but nod my head in agreement.  Identifying and diagnosing change is possibly the most critical step to creating a successful change initiative, but it is also the step we find that is most often minimized or neglected.

Thinking back on the hundreds of change discussions I have had with clients and colleagues, I have concluded there are Ten Critical Success Factors that best enable us to guide our clients through the identification and diagnostic process.  By asking these questions throughout the change process, change managers can make more informed decisions overall.  

  1. Is the Current State Case for Change Strong?
  1. Is the Desired State Definition Clearly Defined?
  1. Is the Delta State Performance Impact Acknowledged?
  1. Is the Impact of Multiple Changes Understood?
  1. Is the Impact of History Acknowledged and Mitigated?
  1. Is Sponsorship Effective at All Levels?
  1. Are Change Agents Capable and Willing to Facilitate the Change?
  1. Is the Impact of Culture Acknowledged and Mitigated?
  1. Is Target Resistance Identified, Analyzed and Mitigated Effectively
  2. Is Change Project Governance Operational?

It is an exciting time as ACMP continues to research the discipline of change management and define the profession.  Change practitioners everywhere will benefit from those continued efforts.
